NO. 1 27 OCTOBER, 1945 PAGE 1

THE USS HAROLD J. ELLISON
------------------------------
NAMED IN HONOR OF ENSIGN HAROLD J. ELLISON, NAVY PILOT OF FAMED TORPEDO SQUADRON EIGHT, THE USS HAROLD J. ELLISON, DD864, OUR NAVY’S NEWEST TYPE SUPER DESTROYER, WAS COMMISSIONED AT THE NEW YORK NAVY YARD, BROOKLYN, NEW YORK ON 23 JUNE, 1945. AFTER THREE WEEKS OF FITTING OUT, FOLLOWED BY SEA TRAILS THE ELLISON LEFT NEW YORK ENROUTE TO GUANTANAMO BAY, CUBA, FOR HER SHAKEDOWN CRUISE. ORIGINALLY SCHEDULED TO JOIN THE PACIFIC FLEET, PROBABLY FOR THE PROPOSED INVASION   OF THE JAPANESE HOME ISLANDS, THE ELLISON WAS JUST COMPLETING HER SHAKEDOWN PERIOD AT THE TIME OF THE JAPANESE CAPITULATION. NOW A UNIT OF THE ATLANTIC FLEET, THE ELLISON IS SERVING AS A  TRAINING SHIP FOR OTHER NEW DESTROYER CREWS AT THE NAVAL OPERATING BASE, NORFOLK, VIRGINIA. SEVERAL DAYS AGO THE  ELLISON WAS MADE THE FLAG SHIP OF REAR ADMIRAL C.F. BRYANT WHO IS THE COMMANDER OPERATIONAL TRAINING COMMAND, U.S. ATLANTIC FLEET. ADMIRAL BRYANT WAS IN CHARGE OF ONE OF THE  BEACH BOMBARDMENTS DURING THE NORMANDY INVASION FROM ABOARD THE BATTLESHIP TEXAS WHEN SHE WAS HIT. AT THE INVASION OF SOUTHERN FRANCE HE HAD CHARGE OF THE FIRE SUPPORT. IT WAS AFTER THE INVASION OF SOUTHERN FRANCE THAT HE RETURNED TO THE STATES TO ASSUME HIS PRESENT COMMAND.
------------------------------
WHAT TO CALL IT
------------------------------

NOW THAT THE FIRST ISSUE OF THE SHIP’S PAPER IS OUT THE BIG QUESTION IS WHAT CAPTION SHALL IT CARRY. THE ANSWER TO THE QUESTION LIES WITH THE CREW, AND A PARKER FOUNTAIN PEN BELONGS TO THE MAN SUBMITTING THE BEST NAME.

A COMMITTEE WILL BE SELECTED CONSISTING OF ONE MAN FROM EACH DIVISION TO CONSIDER AND DECIDE THE BEST NAME SUBMITTED. SO ALL THAT YOU HAVE TO DO IS THINK UP A NAME YOU BELIEVE BEST FOR THE PAPER AND HAND IT TO THE GUARD ON WATCH IN CIC. HE WILL PUT THE DATE AND TIME SUBMITTED ON YOUR PAPER AND PUT IN THE NAME CONTEST BOX. THE PURPOSE OF THIS IS TO GET AWAY FROM THE POSSIBILITY OF DUPLICATION. NATURALLY THE FIRST OF DUPLICATE NAMES SUBMITTED WILL BE THEONE CONSIDERED. ALL NAMES MUST BE SUBMITTED BY 2400 1 NOVEMBER, 1945 TO BE CONSIDERED.

THE WINNER WILL BE ANNOUNCED IN THE NEXT ISSUE AND WILL RECEIVE THE PARKER FOUNTAIN PEN AS A PRIZE.

ENSIGN HAROLD J. ELLISON

------------------------------

ENSIGN HAROLD J. ELLISON A MEMBER OF THE FAMED TORPEDO SQUADRON 8 THAT LOST ALL BUT ONE OF IT’S THIRTY OFFICERS AND MEN AT THE BATTLE OF MIDWAY, WAS BORN IN BUFFALO, NEW YORK 17 JANUARY, 1917. HE ENLISTED IN THE UNITED STATES NAVAL RESERVE AS A SEAMAN SECOND CLASS AT THE NAVAL RESERVE AVIATION BASE, BROOKLYN, NEW YORK ON 4 MARCH, 1941 AND ON 1 APRIL OF THAT YEAR BECAME AN AVIATION CADET. ON 20 OCTOBER 1941 HE WAS COMMISSIONED AND ENSIGN TO RANK FROM EO OCTOBER. HE RECEIVED HIS FLIGHT TRAINING AT FLOYD BENNETT FIELD, NEW YORK AND THE NAVAL AIR STATIONS AT PENSACOLA, FLORIDA AND MIAMI, FLORIDA.

THEN ENSIGN, NOW LT., GEORGE H. GAY, THE SOLE SURVIVOR OF THE SQADRON WRITING IN THE AUGUST 31, 1942 ISSUE OF LIFE SAYS THAT ENSIGN ELLISON WAS KNOWN AS "ELLY" AND THAT HE WAS "HANDSOME, SLENDER AND FIDGET AND HAD LEFT A WHITE COLLAR JOB IN AN INSURANCE OFFIE IN UPPER NEW YORK STATE".

TORPEDO SQUADRON HAD IT’S BEGINNING IN NORFOLK, VIRGINIA IN THE FALL OF 1941. WHEN LT. COMMANDER JOHN CHARLES WALDRON WAS ORDERED TO ORGANIZE A TORPEDO SQUADRON.

SQUADRON 8 WAS ATTACHED TO THE CARRIER HORNET AND SAW IT’S FINAL ACTION AT MIDWAY IN JUNE, 1942. A LARGE NUMBER OF PLANES HAD BEEN SENT OUT FROM OUR CARRIERS TO FIND THE JAPANESE. THERE WERE TORPEDOS, PLANES AND DIVE-BOMBERS. ALL WITHOUT FIGHTER PROTECTION. DUE TO FOUL WEATHER SQUADRON 8 BECAME SEPARATED FROM THE REST OF THE PLANES AND ALSO FAILED TO FIND THE JAPANESE. WALDRON REASONED THAT IF THE JAPS WERE NOT WHERE THEY WERE LAST REPORTED THEY MUST HAVE TURNED BACK SO HE PROCEEDED ON THAT THEORY. THIS REASONING PROVED CORRECT FOR HE FOUND THE JAPS, FOUR CARRIERS TOGETHER WITH THEIR PROTECTING SHIPS.

THE SQUADRON HAD GONE SO FAR IN FINDING THE ENEMY THAT THE GAS WAS GETTING LOW AND ASIDE FROM THAT THERE WAS NO FIGHTER PROTECTION. WALDRON WAS RAIOED, "REQUEST PERMISSION TO WITHDRAW FROM ACTION AND REFUEL." THE ANSWER FROM ADMIRAL SPRUANCE WAS, "ATTACK AT ONCE." THE ADMIRAL FELT THAT SINCE THE JAPS HAD ESCAPED FROM OBSERVATION ONCE THAT THEY MIGHT DO IT AGAIN AND RETURN WITH THEIR SUPERIOR FORCE--SO ATTACK WAS THE ONLY ALTERNATIVE.

THE ENSUING BATTLE WAS ONE OF HEROISM AND DEATH. ALL PLANES OF TORPEDO SQUADRON 8 WERE LOST AND ONLY ENSIGN GAY SURVIVED, BUT THE ATTACK HAD CAUGHT THE JAPS COMPLETELY OFF GUARD AND IT SERVED TO ROUT THE JAPANESE FLEET FOR THE FIRST TIME IN THE WAR.

------------------------------

ACCORDING TO THE LATEST FIGURES APPROXIMATELY "25" MEAN ABOARD THE ELLISON ARE TAKING STUDY COURSES OFFERD BY THE UNITED STATES ARMED FORCES INSTITUTE. THE US A.F.I. IS AN ORGANIZATION ENABLING SERVICEMEN AND WOMEN AN OPPORTUNITY TO CARRY ON THEIR SCHOOLING WHILE IN THE SERVICE. THOSE WHO ARE INTERESTED IN COMPLETING THEIR HIGH SCHOOL OR COLLEGE CREDITS OR JUST WISH TO STUDY IN PREPARATION FOR COLLEGE LATER ON ARE HAVING A CHANCE TO DO SO.

LT (JG) MCKINZIE, THE EDUCATIONAL OFFICER, IS IN CHARGE OF THE PROGRAM ABROAD THE SHIP. HE HAS FULL INFORMATION ON THE COURSES OFFERED BY THE U.S.A.F.I. THERE IS A CHARGE OF $2.00 WHEN YHOU BEGIN YOUR FIRST COURSE, BUT ALL COURSES YOU MAY WISH TO TAKE LATER ARE FREE.

IN ORDER TO FINISH HIGH SCHOOL CREDITS FOR GRADUATION YOU MUST FIRST HAVE A LETTER FROM YOUR PRINCIPAL STATING THE NUMBER OF CREDITS YOU LACK AND A LIST OF COURSES WHICH ARE RECOMMENDED FOR YOU TO STUDY. ANYONE THAT IS INTERESTED MAY SEE MR. MCKENZIE FOR OTHER DETAILS.

------------------------------
INTERNATIONAL BALL?
------------------------------

ALTHOUGH IT US NOW RATHER LATE IN THE SEASON PLANS ARE AFOOT TO ORGANIZE DIVISIONAL BASEBALL TEAMS. IF ENOUGH INTEREST IS DISPLAYED AND ENOUGH MEN EXPRESS A WILLINGNESS TO PARTICIPATE A SCHEDULE WILL BE MADE AND PLAY WILL BEGIN, CUMULATING IN PLAY FOR THE SHIP’S CHAMPIONSHIP.

ENS. BROWN IS THE OFFICER IN CHARGE, AND HE STATES THAT THUS FAR LITTLE INTEREST HAS BEEN SHOWN. SO IF YOU HAVE THE COMPETITIVE SPIRIT AND WOULD LIKE TO PLAY BASEBALL JUST LET YOUR DESIRE BE KNOWN.

SHOULD THE PLANS MATERIALIZE THE SHIPS PAPER WILL CARRY THE STANDINGS TOGETHER WITH A WRITE UP OF EACH GAME.

------------------------------
THE SKIPPER
------------------------------

"IN COMMAND OF THE HAROLD J. ELLSON, SLEEK NEW DESTROYER WHICH CARRIED THE FLORAL TRIBUTES TO SEA IN THE NAVY’S MEMORIAL SUNDAY SERVICES, WAS COMMANDER JERRY CURTIS SOUTH, USN, OF NORFOLK", SAID THE NORFOLK VIRGINIAN PILOT ON TUESDAY. THE ABOVE STATEMENT CORRECTED MONDAY ACCOUNT OF THE CEREMONIES WHICH CREATED CONFUSION WHEN A TYPGRAPHICAL ERROR CONVERTED THE NAME SOUTH TO SMITH. YOUR EDITORS, FEELING A WARSHIP WAS NO PLACE FOR CONFUSION, ASSIGNED THEIR ENTIRE STAFF TO THE STORY AND CAME UP WITH THE FOLLLOWING:

THERE IS NO POSSIBILITY OF CONFUSING OUR SKIPPER WITH CAPTAIN JOHN SMITH IF YOU WILL KEEP THEIR AGES IN MIND. THE ELLISON’S C.O. IS 36 YEARS OLD, WHEREAS CAPTAIN SMITH, IF STILL KICKING, WOULD BE 336.

FURTHER, THERE WILL BE NO CONFUSING OF COMMANDER SMOUTH WITH THE SMITHS OF COUCH DROP FAME IF YOU WILL REMEMBER THAT THE SKIPPER IS BLOND, WITHOUT FACIAL SHRUBBERY, AND HAS THE GENEROUS DIMENSIONS OF THE MAN YOU DON’T SEE WHEN LOOKING FOR A FIGHT.

WITH THE SMITH BROTHERS DISPOSED OF AND THE SUBJECT OF FIGHTING INTRODUCED, WE FLASH BACK TO ANNAPOLIS AND THE CLASS OF 1931. THERE WE FIND CADET JERRY CURTIS SOUTH ON A TEETER-TOTTER, NEATLY VACILLATING BETWEEN MIDDLEWEIGHT AND LIGHTWEIGHT IN THE WEEKLY BOXING EVENTS.

A STUDY OF THE ABOVE PROCESS DISCLOSES THAT CADET SOUTH’S APPEARANCES IN THE MIDDLEWEIGHT RING CURIOUSLY COINCIDES WITH THE APPEARANCE IN THE LIGHT-HEAVEY-WEIGHT RING OF A PARTICULARLY FORMIDABLE OPPONENT. THIS LEADS SOME OF THE MORE DISRESPECTFUL ONLOCKERS TO SUGGEST THAT CADET SOUTH IS DELIBERATELY STARVING FOR A WEEK BEFORE THE EVENTS.

ANYWAY, ALL GOES WELL UNTIL ONE FINE DAY NAVAL INTELLIGENCE GETS THE FACTS TWISTED AND CADET SOUTH FINDS HIMSELF IN THE RIGHT RING AT THE WRONG TIME, LEARNING THE IMPORTANCE OF DAMAGE CONTROL. THIS SUDDENLY INCREASES HIS INTEREST IN LACROSSE, WHICH HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH BOXING.

LAUNCHING INTO A BLOODY LACROSSE CAREER, AN EXCELLENT FORM OF CONDITIONING FOR THEWARD JUST CONCLUDED, CADET SOUTH GAINS SUCH DISTINCTION PLAYING CENTER THAT IN 1931 HE IS CHOSEN CAPTAIN. WHEREUPON HE DECIDES THAT PLAYING CENTER IS FAR TOO STRENUOUS FOR AN OLD MAN (HE IS NOW A SENIOR) AND SHIFTS HIMSELF TO GUARD POSITION "TO LET SOMEONE ELSE TAKE THE SPOT LIGHT".

GRADUATION, HATS FLY THROUGH THE AIR, AND ENSIGN SOUTH WENT ABOARD THE BATTLESHIP PENNSYLVANIA FOR 22 MONTHS OF DUTY VARIOUSLY ASSIGNED TO ENGINEERING, COMMUNICATION AND NAVIGATION.

AT THE SAME TIME HE FORMED A PARTNERSHIP WITH THE FORMER MISS DORIS HUTTON OF HOUSTON, TEXAS, THOUGH HIMSELF BORN IN MOUNTAIN HOME ARKANSAS. TODAY THEY BOAST A DAUGHTER, RAYMONDE SOUTH JR., 9.

THE USS ELLISON, WHICH COMMANDER SOUTH PUT INTO COMMISSION LAST JUNE, IS THE SKIPPER’S 4TH DESTROYER AND HIS SECOND COMMAND.

FROM 1933 TO 1937 HE SERVED IN TURN AS COMMUNICATIONS OFFICER, FIRST LIEUTENANT AND GUNNERY OFFICER ABOARD THE USS TREVER AND THE USS PRUITT. DURING THE FIRST TWO AND A HALF YEARS OF THIS WAR ABOARD THE USS HACOMB, THE LAST FIFTEEN AS SKIPPER, HE SHOT HIS WAY THROUGH THE ATLANTIC AND MEDITERRANEAN CAMPAIGNS.

BETWEEN 1937 AND 1941 COMMANDER SOUTH SAW A VARIETY OF DUTY ABOARD THE SUBMARINE TENDER USS BEAVER, POST GRADUATE STUDY AT ANNAPOLIS, THE HYDROGRAPHIC OFFICE IN WASHINGTON, AND ABOARD THE SURVEY SHIP USS BOWDITCH.

THOUGH CONSIDERING HIMSELF PRIMARILY A DESTROYER SAILOR, THE CAPTAIN EARNED HIS BRONZE STAR MEDAL FOR THE NORMANDY LANDINGS, AND IN LIEU OF A SECOND AWARD, THIS GOLD STAR MEDAL FOR THE SOUTHERN FRANCE INVASION, ABOARD THE HEAVY CRUISER TUSCALOOSA AS CHIEF OF STAFF OF COMMANDER CRUISER DIVISION 7.

NO STANDARD EQUIPMENT FOR COMMANDING OFFIDERS IS A GREAT SENSE OF HUMOR AND AN ABILITY NEVRE TO GET EXCITED. BUT COMMANDER SOUTH HAS BOTH AND WE SUSPECT THESE QUALITIES ARE REPONSIBLE FOR HIS SURVIVING 19 YEARS IN THE NAVY, A WORLD WAR, AND THE RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE $11,000,000 ELLISON.

LEAST ANYONE THINKS OTHERWISE, HOWEVER. LET US RECALL THAT THE SKIPPER ALWAYS GETS WHAT HE WANTS….EVEN IF IT’S A TEN-FOOT SECTION OF A TANKER’S FUEL LINE.

NOTE; THIS ARTICLE ON THE SKIPP WAS CONTRIBUTED BY ENSIGN CRANE. WE EXTEND OUR THANKS.

ELLISON PARTICIPATES IN
TRIBUTE TO NAVY DEAD

------------------------------

LAST SUNDAY IN 28 PORTS ALL AROUND THE WORLD, THE NAVY PAID TRIBUTE TO IT’S DEAD HEROS OF WORLD WAR II. NORFOLK, VIRGINIA WAS ONE OF THOSE PORTS, AND THE ELLISON WAS DESIGNATED AS THE SHIP TO CARRY THE FLOWERS. HONORING THE DEAD, OUT TO SEA.

THE SHIP WAS BEAUTIFULLY DRAPED WITH FLOWERS BEFORE DIVINE SERVICES WERE HELD ON THREE DIFFERENT PIERS. THE PROTESTANT, CATHOLIC AND JEWISH FAITHS EACH ON A SEPARATE PIER. AFTER THE SERVICES THE CHAPLAINS OF THE THREE FAITHS CAME ABOARD TOGETHER WITH REPRESENTATIVES OF THE AMERICAN LEGION AND THE SHIP SAILED OUT TO SEA.

OUT OF SIGH OF LAND THE ELLISON AND THREE NAVY PLANES HAD A RENDEZVOUS. PRAYERS WERE THEN OFFERED AFTER WHICH THE FLOWERS WERE DROPPED INTO THE WATER BY THE PLANES AND THE SHIP IN A VERY IMPRESSIVE CEREMONY.

SCUTTLEBUT OR FACT
------------------------------

HERE IS A SUGGESTED DIRECTIVE IN LINE WITH PRESENT DISCHARGE PLANS----------EFFECTIVE 2122 ON 30 OCTOBER, 1945 ANY MAN HAVING ALL OF THE FOLLOWING LETTERS IN MIDDLE NAME Z R Y U V C T Q WILL BE ENTITLED TO DISCHARGE PROVIDED HE HAS AT LEAST 47 3/8 POINTS AS OF THAT DATE, AND PROVIDED FURTHER THAT HE HAS A MINIMUM OF 50 MONTHS 21 DAYS, 11 HOURS 30 MINUTES AND 7 SECONDS OF CONTINUOUS SEA DUTY. *** THE ENTIRE PURPOSE OF THIS DIRECTIVE WOULD BE TO SPEED UP THE RATE OF DISCHARGE.

DID YOU HEAR ABOUT THE MEMBER OF THE BALANCE CREW WHO ASKED WHETHER THE SEA PAINTER WAS FIRST OR SECOND CLASS? *** I BELIEVE TOP HONORS FOR BEING TOLD TO LAY DOWN TO THE QUARTER DECK THE GREATEST NUMBER OF TIMES GOES TO THOMPSON, GUNNER’S MATE STRIKER. HE IS EITHER A GOOD MAN OR HE GETS INTO A LOT OF TROUBLE. YOUR GUESS IS AS GOOD AS MINE! *** GET BELZ, RDM 2/C TO TELL YOU OF HIS EXPERIENCES ON SHORE PATROL THE OTHER SUNDAY. ---REALLY RUGGED*** ONE THE SP(S) WAS TELLING THE OTHER NIGHT THAT AN OFFICER ONCE STOPPED HIM ON THE STREET AND SAID, "CALL ME A TAXI". THE SP SAID, "YOU WANT ME TO CALL YOU A TAXI?" THE REPLY WAS "YES" "OKAY, YOUR’RE A TAXI!" ANSWERED THE SP AND WALKED ON.

IN THE CHOW LINE IT IS NOT A QUESTION OF YOUR GETTING THERE EARLY TO GET AT THE HEAD OF THE LINE, BUT RATHER OF A "FRIEND" OF YOURS GETTING THERE EARLY.

RECORD FOR THE LONGEST OOD WATCH MUST GO TO MR. MERKEL WITH 15 HOURS WHEN WE WERE AT EARLE, N.J.

ANY VIEWS OR OPINIONS EXPRESSED IN THIS PAPER ARE THOSE OF THE WRITER, AND ARE NOT NECESSARILY THOSE OF THE NAVY DEPARTMENT OR OF THE SHIP’S COMMAND.

NEXT WEEK THE PAPER WILL CARRY A STORY ON THE LATEST OFFICIAL DISCHARGE NEWS SO LETS NOT BREAK ANY ARMS REACHING FOR THE NEXT ISSUE!

THE SHIP’S ORGANIZATION
------------------------------
THE ELLISON’S CREW IS DIVIDED UP INTO DIVISIONS WITH AN OFFICER AT THE HEAD OF EACH. BELOW ARE SHORT ARTICLES WRITTEN BY EACH DIVISION OFFICER TELLING OF THE DUTIES OF HIS DIVISION.

FIRST DIVISION

FOR THE PAST TWO WEEKS THE PHRASE "STATION THE ANCHOR DETAIL" HAS BEEN A FAMILIAR CALL ABOUT THE SHIP. TO MOST OF THE MEN ABOARD THIS MEANS THAT CHOW WILL BE DOWN IN 10 MINUTES OR SO, BUT TO THE FIRST DIVISION THIS MEANS DROPPING THE HOOK WITH ALL THE ASSORTED DETAILS THROWN IN.

HOWEVER, TAKING CHARGE OF ANCHORING IS JUST ONE OF THE JOBS THE FIRST DIVISION IS RESPONSIBLE FOR. ACTUALLY, WITH THE EXCEPTION OF ONLY A FEW COMPARTMENTS, THE FIRST DIVISION IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE UPKEEP, WATER, TIGHT INTEGRITY AND CLEANLINESS OF THE ENTIRE FORWARD PART OF THE SHIP BOTH DECKS AND TOPSIDE.

ONE NOT VERSED IN THE TERMS OF MOORING WHEN HE HEARD THE ORDER "HOLD ONE", ONE MIGHT VERY WELL ASK, "WHICH ON?" THE MOORING OF THE SHIP TO A DOCK, ANOTHER SHIP, OR BUOY IS TAKEN CARE OF FORWARD BY THE FIRST DIVISION ALSO. ACTUALLY THE FIRST DIVISION IS THE PLACE TO FIND THE SEAMEN, COXSWAINS AND BOAT SWAINMATES WHO ARE THE TRUE SAILORS-WITHOUT QUESTION. THESE ARE THE MEN WHO ARE ON THE JOB NO MATTER WHAT THE WEATHER OR THE SEA.

SECOND DIVISION

YOUR SHIPMATES IN THE SECOND DIVISION ARE THE MEN WHO WORK TOPSIDE FROM FRAME 80, AFT. THIS IS THE "BOAT DIVISION". COMPOSED OF 47 ABLE SEAMEN AND PETTY OFFICERS, IT IS A COORDINATED GROUP OF MEN TRAINED IN THE ESSENTIALS OF SEAMANSHIP. THERE’S A LOT OF SHIP AFT OF FRAME 80, BUT THE SECOND MANAGES TO KEEP THEIR PART OF HER "SHIPSHAPE." THE EXCELLENT MORALE OF THE MEN IN THE SECOND DIVISION IS TYPIFIED BY THEIR MOTTO; "NEVER DO TODAY WHAT YOU CAN PUT OFF ‘TIL AFTER YOUR’RE DISCHARGED."

"O" DIVISION

IN Its BROADEST SENSE, THE "O" DIVISION IS THAT DEPARTMENT OF THE SHIP THAT MAKES THE ELLISON A MAN-OF-WAR. FOR IT IS THE ARMAMENT, OFFENSIVE AND DEFENSIVE, WHICH DISTINGUISHES A MAN-OF-WAR FROM AN AUXILIARY. THE ULTIMATE AIM OF ALL OTHER DEPARTMENTS IS TO PLACE THE OFFENSIVE ARMAMENT OF THE SHIP IN AN ADVANTAGEOUS POSITION FOR ENGAGING THE ENEMY.

ABOARD THE ELLISON THE "O" DIVISION MAY BE LOGICALLY BROKEN DOWN INTO THREE "GANGS": GUNNER’S MATES, TORPEDOMAN’S MATES AND FIRE CONTROLMEN.

GUNNER’S MATES ARE CHARGED WITH THE RESPONSBILITY OF MAINTAINING ALL PROJECTILE FIRING WEAPONS AND THE AMMUNITION FOR THESE WEAPONS.

TORPEDOMAN’S MATES ARE CHARGED WITH THE RESPONSBILITY OF MAINTAINING AND OPERATING ALL UNDERWATER ORDINANCES, AND ITS RELATED EQUIPMENT.

FIRE CONTROLMEN ARE CHARGED WITH THE RESPONSIBILITY OF MAINTAINING AND OPERATING THE EQUIPMENT EMPLOYED IN THE CONTROL OF THE OFFENSIVE ARMAMENT OF THE SHIP.

THE GUNNERY OFFICER IS THE HEAD OF THE GUNNERY DEPARTMENT AND HAS THREE ASSISTANTS, THE ASSISTANT GUNNERY OFFICER (IN CHARGE OF THE GUNNER’S MATES GAGN), THE FIRE CONTROL OFFICER (IN CHARGE OF THE FIRE CONTROL GANG), AND THE TORPEDO OFFICER (IN CHARGE OF THE FIRE CONTROL GANG). EACH GANG ALSO HAS A CHIEF PETTY OFFICER.

IN ADDITION TO RANKING HIGH IN THEIR MILITARY DUTIES, BEING ALL RIGHT ARM RATES, THE MEN OF THIS DIVISION MUST BE VERSATILE IN THEIR TECHNICAL DUTIES. A FEW OF THE SUBJECT THAT MUST BE MASTERED BY THE MEN OF THIS DIVISION ARE; ELECTRICITY, BASIS MECHANICAL APPLIANCES, ELECTRONICS, HYDRAULICS, INTERIOR AND EXTERIOR BASSLISTICS, TRIGONOMETRY, ALGEBRA, GEOMETRY, PHYSICS AND OPTICS.

IN ADDITION TO UNDERSTANDING THEIR OWN EQUIPMENT, AND TEACHING IT’S OPERATION TO OTHERS, THEY MUST BE PROFICIENT AS TELEPHONE TALKERS, LINE HANDLERS, HELMSMEN, AND MANY OTHER JOBS.

ENGINEER DIVISION

THE ENGINEER DIVISION IS CHARGED WITH THE OPERATION AND UPKEEP OF ALL MACHINERY ON THE SHIP EXCEPT THAT ASSIGNED TO THE TECHNICIANS IN OTHER DEPARTMENTS OR DIVISION SUCH AS FIRE CONTROLSMEN AND RADIO TECHNICIANS. IT IS USUALLY THE LARGEST DIVISION OF THE SHIP’S COMPANY IN DESTROYERS, AND CONTAINS THE FOLLOWING RATINGS; MACHINIST’S MATES, WATERTENDERS, ELECTRICIAN’S MATES AND FIREMEN.

ALL ENGINEER RATINGS ARE ASSIGNED TO ONE OF SIX STATIONS. THESE ARE THE FORWARD FIREROOM, FORWARD ENGINEROOM, AFTER FIREROOM, AFTER ENGINEROOM, ELECTRICAL STATION AND AUXILIARY STATION. ALL PERSONNEL ARE ASSIGNED WATCHES IN ONE OF THREE STEAMING SECTIONS. AT GENERAL QUARTERS THE ENGINEERS MAN THE MACHINERY STATIONS IN SUFFICIENT FORCE TO OPERATE AT FULL POWER AND, IN ADDITION, SPECIALLY TRAINED RATINGS ARE DISPERSED THROUGH THE REPAIR PARTIES AND THE REMAINING MEN MAN STATIONS IN THE LIGHT ANTI-AIRCRAFT BATTERIES.

A SUCCESSFUL CAREER IN ANY OF THE ENGINEER RATINGS CALLS FOR INTELLIGENT AND INDUSTRIOUS MEN WHOARE CAPABLE OF INCREASING THEIR KNOWLEDGE BY THEIR OWN STUDY AND WORK. PETTY OFFICERS HAVE VITAL RESPONSIBLITIES IN FIGHTING THE SHIP IN WAR AND OPERATING IN PEACETIME. MOST ENLISTED BELIEVE THE ENGINEERING WATCHES AND STATION WORK ARE AS INTERESTING AS ANY THE NAVY HAS TO OFFER. ANY MAN WHO REALLY COMES UP TO THE REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS FOR THE ENGINEERING PETTY OFFICERS RATINGS CAN BE SURE OF BEING ABLE TO HOLD DOWN A WELL PAID EQUIVALENT JOB IN CIVILIAN INDUSTRY OR THE MERCHANT MARINE.

"S’ DIVISION

THE "S" DIVISION IS COMPOSED OF PERSONNEL TO DO THE WORK OF DISBURSING, GENERAL SUPPLY, SHIP’S STORE, COMMISSARY, LAUNDRY, BARBER AND MEN TO DO THE WARDROOMS WORK. THE MAIN FUNCTIONS OF DISBURSING INCLUDE CARRYING THE PAY ACCOUNTS OF EVERY OFFICER AND MAN ON BOARD, PAYMENT OF BILLS ON PUBLIC VOUCHERS, HANDLING THE MONEY COLLECTED FROM SALES IN THE SHIP’S STORE AND SALES TO THE WARDROOM MESS, AND SUBMITTING FINANCIAL RETURNS FOR STRICT ACCOUNTABILITY OF ALL GOVERNMENT FUNDS. SINCE OUR COMMISSIONING DAY, $125,000.00 HAS BEEN SPENT THROUGH DISBURSING.

GENERAL SUPPLY INCLUDES ALL MATERIALS FO REACH DEPARTMENT ON BOARD, PLUS SHIPS’S STORE STOCK. COMMISSARY IS CONCERNED WITH FEEDING THE MEN AS GOOD AS POSSBILE WITHIN THE COST PER RATION ALLOWED EACH MAN. SINCE OUR COMMISSIONING DAY, BETTER THAN $31,000.00 WORTH OF FOOD HAS BEEN CONSUMED AT AN AVERAGE COST SEVENTY CENTS PER DAY PER MAN.

PROFITS FROM THE SHIP’S STORE PAY FOR THE MATERIALS USED BY THE LAUNDRYMEN AND BARBER IN GIVING FREE LAUNDRY SERVICE AND HAIRCUTS. THE LAUNDRY USUALLY OPERATES 24 HOURS A DAY AND STILL HAS A DIFFICULT JOB IN KEEPING UP TO SCHEDULE. THE STEWARD AND STEWARD MATES ARE RESPONSIBLE UNDER THE WARDROOM MESS TREASURER FOR FEEDING THE OFFICERS AND UPKEEP OF THEIR QUARTERS. THE "S" DIVISIONS MOTTO OF "SERVICE FOR THE SERVICE" IS VERY APPROPRIATE.

"C" DIVISION

THE COMMDIV IS NO LONGER THE OLD GANG KNOWN AS "RADIO GIRLS". TODAY IT HAS GROWN AND ENGULFS MANY MORE RATES--ALL TECHNICAL. THERE ARE RADIOMEN, RADARMEN, SONARMEN, QUARTERMASTERS, SIGNALMEN, RADIO TECHNICIANS, YEOMEN, RADAR TECHNICIANS, PHARMACIST MATES AND LAST BUT NOT LEAST (AND NEVER FORGOTTEN) THE STRIKERS. THE "ELEGANT E" HAS IN ITS FOLDS, EITHER WHOLLY OR PARTLY, SIX OFFICERS. LT (JG) R.B. KITT IS THE HEAD OF THE DEPARTMENT HAVING JUST BECOME A "SPARKY" AFTER BEING TRANSFERRED FROM THE "O" DIVISION TO REPLACE LT. SHIPEK, THE FORMER HEAD OF THE DEPARTMENT WHO WAS "POINTED" OUT OF THE NAVY LIFE. ENS. PROKOPEC IS THE DIVISION OFFICER AND CUSTODIAN OF PUBLICATIONS. HIS IS THE JOB TO LOAN OUT, CORRECT, RECORRECT, CHANGE, PAST IN, DELETE AND ADD TO THE MANY DOCUMENTS HELD FOR SHIP COMMUNICATIONS. ENS. MERKEL IS THE CIO OFFICER AND TO HIM GOES THE JOB OF KEEPING THE GANG MOVING AND REALLY--THE EFFICIENCY EXPERT. ENS. CRANE IS THE ELECTRONICS CARETAKER. WITH HIS GANG OF TROUBLE SHOOTERS, THE TECHNICIANS, THEY DELVE IN TO THE JUMBLES OF TUBES, WIRES, CONDENSERS, RESISTORS, AND WHAT NOT THAT GO INTO THOSE CASES HAVING ALL THE KNOBS, DIALS AND POINTERS THAT EVERYONE WANTS TO TOUCH……AND USUALLY DOES! ENS RODDA SUPERVISES THE "PING JOCKEYS" AND VERY WELL TOO. HIS MEN KNOW EVERY FISH IN CHESAPEAKE BAY, GITMO BAY, AND THE ATLANTIC POND. HAVING A BAD HEART OR ATHSMAN, ENS. STIRBA HANDLES THE "FLY BOYS" AND "AIRPLANE DRIVERS" WHEN NEEDED BY THE SHIP.

THERE ARE 33 PETTY OFFICERS AND 32 STRIKERS IN THE GANG. THE LEADING PETTY OFFICERS OF THE VARIOUS GANGS ARE FLEMING QM1/C, BAUGH SM1/C, DIXON SOM1/C, MATHEWS RM1/C, -----ALSO THE "C" DIVISION HAS A BANGUP SOFTBALL TEAM HAVING WON ONE OUT OF FOUR ALREADY. (WE’VE GOT A MILLION ALIBIS).

THE ELLISON HAS ALL THE LATEST TYPE RADAR AND RADIO EQUIPMENT NOW AVAILABLE TO THE DESTROYER FLEET AND IS SCHEDULED FOR MORE WHICH IS BEING READIED FO RISSUE. THERE ARE ON BOARD: 6 TRANSMITTERS, 20 RECEIVERS, 7 TRANSCEIVERS, (COMBINATION) AND 15 RADARS.

DO NOT BE A PEACE DEFEATIST

IT IS HARD TO SAY HOW MANY TIMES MEN IN THE ARMED FORCES HAVE BEEN HEARD TO SAY THAT THERE WILL BE ANOTHER WAR IN 20 OR 25 YEARS, IF NOT SOONER, AND THUS THAT THERE IS NO PARTICULAR REASON TO TAKE TALK OF WORLD PEACE AND SECURITY SERIOUSLY.

THIS TALK OF ANOTHER WAR WAS HEARD WHILE WE WERE STILL FIGHTING WORLD WAR II, AND IT IS EVEN MORE PREVALENT NOW THAT FINAL VICTORY HAS COME. SOME EVEN GO SO FAR AS TO NAME OUR FOE IN THAT COMING WAR.

NOW IS THIS A HEALTHY AND INTELLIGENT ATTITUDE TO TAKE, PARTICULARLY FOR THOSE WHO HAVE JUST FOUGHT A WAR? SHOULD WE MERELY SAY THERE IS NOTHING THAT CAN BE DONE TO PREVENT WAR, THEREFORE, LET’S ENJOY PEACE WHILE IT IS HERE AND NOT WASTE VALUABLE TIME BY USELESS TALK OF LASTING PEACE? THIS IS DANGEROUS. SURELY THERE IS A MEANS OF ACHIEVING LASTING PEACE AND ALL SHOULD BE SEARCHING FOR THAT MEANS.

WHAT METHOD OR MEANS WE SHOULD TAKE IN BRINGING ABOUT THAT PEACE IS NOT HERE ARGUED, BUT WE SHOULD ALL THINK AND BELIEVE THAT A LASTING PEACE IS POSSIBLE. THAT IS ONE OF THE REASONS FOR WHICH WE FOUGHT THE WAR. THINK!! THAT SHOULD BE THE KEY WORD. READ AND STUDY PROPOSED PLANS OF WORLD PEACE. IF YOU AGREE OR DISAGREE YOU SHOULD HAVE REASONS. NOW IS THE TIME TO TALK AND WORK OUT A PLAN, LET US NOT FAIL.

IF DURING THE WAR WE SHOULD HAVE ALL HAD THAT ATTITUDE THAT WE WOULD NOT AND COULD NOT WIN, DO YOU BELIEVE THE RESULTS WOULD HAVE BEEN THE SAME? ONE WHO HAD THAT ATTITUDE WAS LABELED A DEFEATEST. WITHOUT THAT WILL TO WIN WE COULD NEVER HAVE WON. THE SAME IS TRUE OF ANY CONTEST. AND IT IS CERTAINLY JUST AS TRUE OF THE PROBLEM OR PERPETUAL PEACE. DO NOT BE A PEACE DEFEATIST. WE CANNOT AND MUST NOT FIGHT ANOTHER WAR LIKE THE ONE JUST COMPLETED.

BELIEVE LASTING PEACE CAN BE ACHIEVED AND FORMULATE YOUR OWN IDEAS ON HOW IT CAN BE DONE. TAKE AN INTEREST IN ALL PLANS THAT ARE PRESENTED. DO NOT SAY, "IT IS TOO DEEP FOR ME". YOUR FUTURE AND THAT OF YOUR COUNTRY IS AT STAKE. YOU SHOULD BE VITALLY INTERESTED.
